Results of a study conducted by Ishya Consulting are to be presented by Michelle Ell of Global Communities, at a conference in Melbourne Australia on July 18-19. The conference, entitled Children and HIV: Start Early, Start Now--Integrated interventions for young children born into HIV-affected families will focus on best practices for early intervention in children affected by HIV/AIDS.

Ms. Ell will present on "Playgroups: A Promising Approach for Vulnerable Young Children in Rwanda". The presentation is based on the findings of an external program evaluation conducted by Ishya Consulting in 2013 on the Playgroups component of the USAID/Higa Ubeho program implemented by Global Communities. Findings indicated a statistically significant positive effect of playgroups participation on children's physical and psychosocial life skills, controlling for socio-economic status and pre-school attendance. The presentation will also discuss how playgroups contribute to the integration of vulnerable children, as well as obstacles to the involvement of vulnerable children in playgroups, suggesting ways forward for other programs intending to use playgroups as part of an integrated approach to reaching vulnerable children.
